You guys, I cannot believe I’m saying this, but the first proper concert I attended was when I was seventeen! I had been to a Christian music festival once before, but I don’t think I had ever seen a stadium performance until then. When the news had been dropped that Taylor Swift would be playing in Vancouver during the summer of 2015, my longtime group of friends were determined to be there. The 1989 album had been the soundtrack of that winter, so as you can imagine, we were so stoked!
One of my friends’ dads is the king of booking and planning trips. After we all agreed to go, he was ready at his desk with multiple screens so he could snag us tickets for when the sale went live. It was unreal how the delay of just a few seconds would send you so far back in the queue; I’d never seen anything like that. With the tickets secured and the travel dates set, we were ready for the best summer of our lives. From where we lived, Vancouver is about a four-to-five hour drive depending on who’s behind the wheel, so not only were we amped up to sing along to good music, we were giddy about a road trip to the “big city”.
One of my favourite memories was creating custom t-shirts for the concert. I remember our youth pastor at the time was into creating merch, so he helped us get all the supplies we needed. We each picked lyrics from the album to be ironed onto our shirts: I decided to go with “hella good hair,” and if you’ve seen my voluminous island curls, you’d get the vibe. The most vivid memory I had was when Taylor played a mashup of my favourite song, “Wildest Dreams,” with “Enchanted” on the piano. It sounds silly, but until that moment, I had never thought about what it meant to reimagine your own songs live. I felt so inspired—not only to write beautiful music but also to further an idea, giving it a second life in an alternate universe. Art evolves with us, and I loved witnessing that firsthand. One day, I hope I get to create a special world with my own music for others to escape into too!
