In this Crazy Tour Stories segment, Miguel, from the metal band, Dark Entity, shares one of his wildest stories from being on the road. You can check out the story below:
We had just arrived in New Orleans coming from Crestview, Florida at 2:30 AM. This was our first time ever being in this part of the country, we were excited and wanted to have a New Orleans experience, like the ones everyone raves about. When we pulled up to our reserved hotel, we noticed all the lights were off in the lobby, quickly putting together that they were closed and we were not getting a room at this hotel. We had nowhere to go, so logically, we needed to find a hotel that was still open. We were in the middle of the city of New Orleans at 3 AM, walking from hotel to hotel desperately trying to find one whose books were not already closed. Surrounded by what felt like zombies crawling the late-night city streets, we eventually were able to find one 10 miles out that would take us in around 5 AM. We were out of that hotel by 11 AM the next morning. I did not sleep that night.
Regardless, we were determined to have our New Orleans experience. We started our day by eating at a corner stop that was recommended to us by a friend in Atlanta, called Fraddy’s One Stop. It was an old-school spot, what I could only describe as having a southern bodega vibe. The food was immaculate. I had never had this type of cuisine before, and it blew my mind. Then things took a turn. We had pulled up to our venue extremely early and decided to walk to Bourbon Street, given it was only a few miles away. We stopped in many places that I could have never even fathomed existing, such as a voodoo shop that was also a laundromat—quite peculiar.
We made it to Bourbon Street and went to the first place everyone kept on telling us about, Pat O’Brien’s Bar, and we were there looking for one thing and one thing only—the Hurricane. We were told that this drink would change our lives, that we had not truly partied before if we hadn’t done it with Hurricanes, and everyone was right. I had one of these drinks and was instantly drunk. I consider myself a man of high tolerance, but this drink humbled me. A second Hurricane then hit my system—a decision that would mark my fate. After drink two was consumed, everything was blackout.
I regained consciousness in Austin, Texas, which doesn’t sound crazy until I realized I had been up for three days at this point and I now had one of my best friend’s faces tattooed on my upper thigh. Yes, you read that right—I had made the decision to have my friend’s face tattooed on my upper thigh. Since I was blacked out after drink number two, I didn’t remember anything. Not the eight hours between Hurricane #2 and the show, definitely not the set we played that night, or arriving in Austin. However, we filmed the whole thing. Everything was vlogged, and I witnessed that fateful day.
I continued drinking as we traversed Bourbon Street, with at times two drinks in my hands that I was simultaneously consuming. There was footage of the rest of the band looking for me because I got lost, as well as photos and videos of me holding parrots, passing out at a restaurant with my food sitting in front of me untouched, lots of dancing, and unfortunately, my friend Dylan’s face being tattooed on my leg. New Orleans was an experience to remember and also to not remember, if you know what I mean. I can’t say that I regret any of it. I look so happy in that footage, and truthfully, I can say I can’t wait to return to what I dubbed in the vlog “The Greatest City on Earth” and relive it all again.
