In this First Concert Ever segment, the pop artist, MINH, shares the story of the first full production concert he ever attended. You can check out his experience below:
When I was young, my parents would take me and my brother to watch Vietnamese variety shows on Friday nights. I don’t think these spaces exist anymore, but at the time it was a family tradition that I loved and looked forward to. The show would be a lineup with popular music and comedy acts, very random. That was my concept of live music and live shows. Looking back, I wouldn’t consider them my first concert.
My first proper full production concert I went to was Ariana Grande at her Sweetener World Tour in 2019, when I was traveling in the US. I was so excited because I’m a huge fan, and she had canceled her show in Vietnam a couple of years back. Also, Normani was opening up for her, and that was a performance I did not want to miss. I flew all the way from California to see her in Buffalo, New York, to catch this show. Looking back, that was quite insane, but it now makes for a great story. It was this trip that I realized how big America was. Out of anyone I could’ve gone with, I saw Ariana with my non English speaking Vietnamese dad. He had no idea what was in store or what was happening half the time. He was just filming me being excited the whole show.
I was quite naive to the concert experience, arriving way too early to the venue, I’m talking 2 pm. No one was there yet; there was a literal snowstorm outside. I remember I came during her soundcheck, and I could hear her and her band. There was something so cool about hearing them rehearse and hearing everything being put together. It felt like getting a peek behind the curtain. I started to imagine what it would be like to one day soundcheck with my band. When I got in, I just remember being shocked at how many people were in this arena. I had never seen so many people in a room in my life and in such an organized manner. It was something I only saw in movies, so at first it was very surreal. To be able to witness this many people coming together was really special and really inspiring to me. I thought to myself, I want this one day. I want to be able to make music that resonates with this many people. The excitement in the room was just electric, and my nineteen year old self was just overstimulated by the grandness of it all.
I was so enamored by her talent, professionalism, and the band. The vocals, the arrangement, the production value... it was a masterclass pop show, pop excellence. I was watching a living legend perform in front of my eyes, and for the first time, not through my phone. It felt so liberating just screaming the songs and lyrics. I think that experience really shaped how I create music now and how I approach my live shows. I really want the audience to feel like they’re a part of this singular energy and for the songs to take them to euphoria. That’s the energy in my new single “Out With Grace,” just completely losing all inhibitions and enjoying the moment to the extreme. One day, I hope to be on tour and perform in arenas, performing my little heart out like Ariana.
