In this Preshow Rituals segment, the alternative band, Grrrl Gang, reveals what they do before taking the stage. You can check out their rituals below:
We’ve been performing for almost a decade now, and, despite looking as if we’re having fun on stage, the jitters never truly go away. It doesn’t matter if we’re playing for 10 or 100 people, the question always hangs: “Will we do a good job?”
The long waits in the green rooms present an opportunity for anxiety and self-doubt to creep in, making our palms balmy and hearts pounding against our chests. We try to distract ourselves by cracking jokes or scrolling on our phones, but all of it can be nauseating.
Five years ago, we would drown it all away with an uncontrollable amount of booze—we didn’t really give a shit about our health, and we just wanted to have fun together with the crowd. But now, as we got older and more serious about our music and live performances, we’re doing vocal exercises together before hitting the stage to loosen up and protect our vocal cords, lowering our alcohol intake and trading bootleg alcohol for beer. These days, leaning into our newly refined tastes, we’ll often share a good bottle of wine.
Then at least fifteen minutes before we go on standby, we huddle into a circle, put our arms around each other, close our eyes, and murmur short prayers. After whispering our amens, we put our hands on top of one another, and I begin to chant the affirmations we started doing early this year: “We are young, we are sexy, we are fun, we are flirty, we are–”
And all together, we finish with: “Pop princess!”
